Flying over the Great Barrier Reef was the highlight of our trip to the Whitsundays. I booked a one hour ‘Reef and Island Scenic Flight’ through GSL Aviation and was floored by the whole experience.
The little heart island. Our pilot made a loop so that both sides could take a good look at this cutie. Up close it’s quite small being around 17 metres wide.
We took a little seaplane holding 12 people and everyone had a window seat. My nerves paled in comparison to the views we saw once we hit the reef. We made our departure near the airport and flew over Conway National Park and mainland rivers before reaching Airlie Beach and the archipelago of 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays. It was cool to see the sandy shores of Whitehaven beach where we were just chilling with mini crabs the day before. Hill Inlet is beautiful from above and is one of the most photographed locations in Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef and endless ocean as far as the eye can see.
